Around the Museum in the town itself there are a number of archaeological ruins which can be visited. They will give you a better understanding of the ancient inhabitants of the city.

Public Bath of Alto da Cividade
In Alto da Cividade it is possible to visit the ruins of a public bath from the time of the Flavian Emperors (2nd half of the 1st century).
Northwest of the public bath the vestiges of a Roman theatre are being studied and can be seen.

Lúcio Craveiro da Silva’s Library
The South crossing between the decamanus maximus and the cardus maximus – at the top of Frei Caetano Brandão street you can see a set of granitic columns which attest to the south crossing of the two main streets of Bracara Augusta: the decumanus maximus (east-west) and the cardus maximus (south-north).
In the area of the present-day library of Lúcio Craveiro da Silva a number of excavations were carried out. A latrine from the Augustus era (1st century) and vestiges of a medieval street were discovered and were integrated into the building itself. The medieval street (Rua Verde) in question was discovered to have actually been built over the south span of the Roman cardus maximus.

The building of Junta de Freguesia da Sé
In the basement of this building the ruins of an insula can be seen. The west side of which were cut by the medieval wall.




S.Paulo’s Square
Less than 20 cm below the surface, lie the vestiges of an insula whose walls are marked by irregular gray stones. This insula opened south to the decamanus maximus.

Seminary of Santiago
In the Cloister of this building there are the ruins of a domus whose peristilo opened south to the decamanus maximus (pre-booked visits are possible).


The Cathedral of Braga
Under the cathedral lie the ruins of a roman market (?) from the High-Empire. It was later converted into a paleochristian church which, in the High Middle Ages, was the place of devotion to St.Mary (pre-booked visits are possible).



Nossa Senhora do Leite Street
On the outside wall of the Cathedral there is an inscription to the Egyptian Goddess Isis which, undoubtedly, was part of an altar in the interior of the Roman Market.




Pastelaria Frigideiras do Cantinho
In the foundations of this building the vestiges of a domus were discovered. They can be seen through the glass floor of the café and cake shop.






Fonte do Ídolo
A very particular monument, one of the most harmonious in the Iberian Peninsula. Experts do not agree on the interpretation of the embossed work even though the name of the dedicator, Celico Fronto, is well known. It is considered to have been a private sanctuary dedicated to the divinity TongoeNabiagoi.

Pre-roman Bath
On the 1st floor leading to the car park the ruins of a pre-roman bath can be seen.
